The term green architecture also refers to sustainable architecture and is based on the concept of amalgamating all the elements that promote spiritual and personal wellbeing, environmental factors, architectural design and eco friendly building materials and techniques. The aim is to construct buildings that are designed to leave less of a carbon footprint by diminishing harmful factors like pollution and excess energy consumption.

Green architecture is an art and a precise science that relies on the architect to produce a design that will comply not only with the needs of our environment but also to the requirements of the client. The design process is an intricate one where the architect faces a range of difficulties to overcome to ultimately successfully ensure a structure with;

• a reduced energy consumption
• an improved recycling capacity
• a maximized flow of natural light
• outdoor and indoor integration
• considerably reduced electromagnetic fields
• improved water systems (recycled water and enhanced plumbing systems)
• improved air quality

Some green homes designed through green architecture will include wind farms (or other wind power systems, solar water heating, photovoltaic, thermals floors and walls, less harmful house paints and varnishes and a combination of eco friendly furniture and furnishes.

Even those in the fashion industry had realized the need of environmental conservation and have taken the initiative to make a difference. “It was an exercise to show that you can replace traditional textiles with innovative new ones that are being made in mills in Japan and Italy and that are less polluting,” said Stine Hedegaard of the Danish Fashion Institute.

‘Green Style’ is the newest trend and is taking the world by storm. In London a fashion show that took place early December 2009 presented a collection stitched together from recycled agricultural or industrial waste. The designers also presented a remarkable showcase of clothing items made of organic cottons and silks and polyester produced from recycled plastic bottles.

The Western Cape in South Africa announced plans for a R850 million wind farm in the St Helena Bay area, prospectively the second largest in the world. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, the Saldanha Municipality and a community-based trust that owns the land has taken the development a step forward in June 2009.
The project is due to a collaborative effort between four parties namely the Seeland Development and Trust, Venergia SA (which is a company in Greece that finances and develops wind farms), Genesis Eco-Energy and Oxfam.

The project is expected to offer a variety of benefits including job creation, reductions in CO² emissions and the development of alternative economic models for the development of renewable energy.

The Western Cape Wind Farm is planning to open in 2010 just prior to the kick-off of the Football World Cup.

Al Gore, a former US Vice President announced a new challenge for all US citizens. He wants to contest the nation to produce 100% of their electricity through natural sustainable energy sources like wind and sun. He states that “It’s an expensive investment but not compared to the rising cost of continuing to invest in fossil fuels,”.

Current US President Barack Obama commented on this by saying “I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy…It’s a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer”.

You don’t have to be an environmentalist to be an earth warrior. You don’t have to change who you are to live green, you have to change what you do. It’s true that deeds speak louder than words, especially if they’re destructive. The first step towards conserving our earth is AWARENESS. With the wide spread reports in the news, internet, television and radio ads and motion pictures this step has already been begun. Most people are aware of the fact that our planet is suffering the consequences brought on by the human hand, we now have to be able to stand together and try to correct our mistakes. Living green is the second step, and for most people a relatively difficult one.
